Make three holes in a short stack of folded paper using a nail and hammer.
2. Thread a needle through the middle hole, working from the inside of the folded paper to the outside of the cover. Leave an inch hanging for tying at the end.
3. Loop back to the inside from the front through the bottom hole.
4. Make a big stitch from the bottom hole to the top hole along the inside fold. 5. Bring the thread back up through the middle; tie; cut.
5. Decorate!

DIY Word Searches

A mandatory word search brought sighs of boredom. In essence, each penguin is fat little pillow with features like wings, feet, and beak sewn or glued on. They're easy to make; build a nest-full!

Ruby's brother Jay, age 12, likes the design, too, and he created these instructions so everyone can follow along. (The only difference between Ruby's design and Jay's is that Ruby attaches the wings with hot glue, and Jay sews them into the seam that makes the penguin's body.) We photographed the penguins in a real snow storm. The little birds loved it!

Building the Brand, Trader Joe's style

Last summer, Hannah entered a drawing contest at our local Trader Joe's supermarket. This weekend, the store called to notify Hannah that she was a winner. TJs in-house artist Ashley Fenderson had transformed Hannah's drawing into a cool shelf label. Hannah got to slip the new graphic into its slot on the salsa shelf. She left the store with a ten-dollar gift card and a million-dollar smile.

We posted Hannah's original drawing this summer; look for it in our July archive.

Photo card becomes composition book

A holiday photo card can be "returned" in the form of a decorated notebook that features the tiny squares of pictured joy. Happy New Year to you too!

Botanical Zine Box

A simple pencil drawing of a geranium becomes a botanical illustration when you add the Latin names in Photoshop. The design possibilities are endless as you put together strips, stripes, and layers of fabric. Start with a sketch while looking at fabrics and trims you have on hand. This skirt can be made with relatively small scraps. Put together the layers into one bigger piece of fabric, then sew it together to make a tube. Create a pocket at the top for a piece of elastic, and you're ready to step out in an awesome new skirt. Project designed by Joy Hayes. It comes in bright colors and simple prints. When you cut it, fleece does not fray, so it requires no hemming (like felt), and is great for new seamsters.

To make a fleece scarf: lay out a length of fleece (2 yards), and cut a long straight strip (1 foot). You can cut two narrower strips in contrasting colors (6 inches each), and sew them together. Or you can cut rectangles of color and sew them together.

To add polka dots or skinnier stripes, you can use fabric glue to attach pieces of fleece to your scarf. Use a lot of fabric glue, as the fleece is very absorbent. (You can also sew them on.)

Variations are endless. Make pockets by folding the bottoms and sewing them on both sides. You can easily fringe your scarf by cutting narrow strips at the bottom or the sides.

Scarves designed by Hannah, Orr, and Ronnie, ages 9 and 10. Project director: Lynn Mally. The flouncy dresses loved by little kids make cool aprons for bigger kids, and require very little sewing.

1. Lay dress flat on table or floor.
2. Cut out the face of the apron, following the side seams up the top of the dress, across the top, and down. The front of the dress will form one piece.
3. Add ties. You can use pieces cut from the back of the dress or grossgrain ribbon. Sew ties on each side at the waist, and at the top right and top left.
4. For a finished look, you can hem the sides. (But remember -- aprons are for messy work, in the kitchen, studio or garden.)

Variations: cut dress at the waist for a half-apron.
If you don't want top ties and there's a button (not a zipper!) at the back, keep the collar (round neck opening) intact and use the button to open and close your apron.

Sand Socks

It's a craft! Megan’s projects involve very few tools and include several no-sew recipes. The book is aimed at single young women, but many projects appeal to the under-12 crowd. My 6-year old daughter Lucy loved melding two years of camp t-shirts into a shizoid hybrid. And the counselors were wowed, too! Indeed, I think summer camp, with its regulation shirts, topsy-turvy dress codes, and low-brow crafting, forms a preteen layer in the DIY t-shirt craze. S'mores, anyone?

To make the shirt: find two shirts of equal size. Go for contrasting colors or funny juxtapositions. Cut both shirts in half. Stitch halves together. If you want, cut off the sleeves and then add complementary ties to the shoulders using scraps from the sleeves.

Altered Purses

When is a scrap book not a scrap book? When it's a purse.

This project takes a long time, but it's nice for long summer days when you can let the different stages dry outside. We got the idea from Violette's Folk Art.

1. Find an old purse with a smooth surface -- vinyl or leather.
2. Sand. Cover with gesso (a white acrylic base). You may have to do one side at a time and let each one dry.
3. Paint with another coat of acrylic in a color you like. (We chose orange.)
4. When the purse is dry, add layers of imagery.

Possibilities include: fabric squares (from fabric scraps or pieces of clothing you can't wear anymore); colored paper; images from magazines, books, the internet, or clipart; simple stickers such as reinforcer rings and office dots. Black and white engravings stand out against a colorful collage background. We added some ribbons on top once we had our images layed out. These delivered a set of clean connecting lines to the busy layers beneath.

For gluing: put a generous layer of ModPodge or another decoupage glue on the surface of the purse. Add your paper or fabric elements, and then put more glue medium on top. The extra glue helps your pieces stick to the purse, and also seal it.

Note: Some items may be less colorfast than others. The funky look of this project, though, is pretty forgiving.

Purse designed by Hannah, age 9.

Door hangers

White foam door hangers (50 cents each at your local craft mart) are easily decorated with materials on hand. We used a Starbucks cardboard cup insulator as a template, and created cozy sleeves for each cup. (We took it apart, laid it flat, and traced it as a pattern for the cup sleeve.) Then, the kids glued on eyes, ears, ribbons, and other stuff to make cuddly characters. (Hot glue worked great on the fleece, forming a very tough bond.) A place card goes at everyone's plate, letting each guest know where to sit. People and stuffies alike enjoy knowing that the hostess has a plan, and it saves a lot of chaos at the last minute if everyone goes right to his or her spot when it's time to serve. You can even design folders or envelopes for the finished photos.

Variations: Fashion Shoot; Rock Band Photo Session.

Design a Shirt Together

Give everyone at your gathering a blank 3-x-5 index card or a half-sheet of paper. Draw a tiny picture, word, or squiggle on your card, and then pass it to your neighbor. As the cards move around the table, they get covered with bits of grafitti—hearts, puppies, curlicues, skulls, aliens, names, whatever. After all the cards have gone around a few times, lay them out and pick the best one. Scan the design, print it out on t-shirt transfer paper, and apply to shirts (Mom's help needed for this part). Seven-year-old girls produced this design.

For a simpler project, pass around tote bags and draw directly with Sharpie's. Patterns are one of the oldest forms of decoration. Anything can be a pattern: dots, stripes, or cherry pie! We made these patterns by drawing simple pictures many times on one sheet of paper.

To give our patterns a printed look, we gave them colored backgrounds in Photoshop. To do this, we scanned them and selected the white backgrounds with the "magic wand" tool. Then we picked colors that look good with our drawings. You can also make patterns in Photoshop by copying one image over and over again. Patterns by Hannah, age 9; and Ruby, age 7.

Re-Composition Books

Get some notebooks from the office supply store, and make your own covers. Invite your friends to bring a special stuffed animal. Plan games and activities that involve the animals. At our party, we made pet tags using metal-rimmed key chain tags from the hardware store, tied on with ribbons. We also made identity card magnets and pet-care blankets from scraps of fabric. Between craft activities, we played with the animals. Everyone went home with neat new stuff for the their pet (but of course, no one wanted to go home, because we were having so much fun!) This party was for girls, age 7-8.
